MKUConnect Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account on MKUConnect, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the platform. MKUConnect is operated by its founders and is open to university and college students across Kenya, with a focus on the Mount Kenya University community.

2. Eligibility

MKUConnect is open to any university or college student in Kenya aged 18 or above. You do not need an MKU email address to register. By signing up you confirm that:

• You are currently enrolled at a recognised university or college in Kenya.
• You are at least 18 years of age.
• All information you provide during registration is accurate and truthful.

MKU students who verify with an official MKU email address (@students.mku.ac.ke or @mylife.mku.ac.ke) receive a “Verified MKU Student” badge, but verification is optional and does not affect access to core platform features.

3. Account Responsibilities

• You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.
• You must not share your account with, or transfer it to, any other person.
• You must provide accurate and truthful information on your profile.
• You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Harass, threaten, or harm any other user.
• Post false, misleading, or fraudulent information.
• Upload content that is sexually explicit, violent, or otherwise offensive.
• Impersonate another person or entity.
• Use automated scripts or bots to interact with the platform.
• Engage in any activity that violates Kenyan law or MKU institutional policies.
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or circumvent any security feature.

5. Content You Post

You retain ownership of the content you submit (photos, bio, messages). By posting, you grant MKUConnect a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store and display that content solely for the purpose of operating the platform. You represent that you have the right to share any content you upload and that it does not infringe any third-party rights.

6. Matching, Messaging & Campus Buzz

MKUConnect enables connections between users who mutually express interest. We do not guarantee matches, conversations, or any specific outcome. All interactions are between users; MKUConnect is not a party to any relationship formed on the platform.

Campus Buzz is a public feed where any registered user can post text and images visible to all users on the platform. By posting to Campus Buzz, you grant MKUConnect a licence to display that content to other users. Posts must comply with our Acceptable Use policy (Section 4). We reserve the right to remove any Buzz post that violates these Terms without notice.

Message Moderation: To maintain a safe environment, authorised MKUConnect administrators may review, flag, or delete private messages that are reported by users or identified as potentially harmful by automated systems. This access is strictly limited to safety and moderation purposes and is logged for accountability. By using the messaging feature, you acknowledge and consent to this limited administrative oversight.

6A. Login Streaks & Profile Boosts

MKUConnect operates a daily login streak system. Users who log in on 7 consecutive days earn a free 24-hour profile boost, which increases their visibility in Browse. Streak counts reset if a day is missed.

• Boosts are non-transferable and have no cash value.
• We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the streak and boost system at any time.
• Artificially inflating streaks (e.g. via automated logins) is prohibited and may result in account suspension.

6B. Referral Programme

MKUConnect operates an optional referral programme. When you refer a new user who completes their profile (photo + intent + campus), you earn progress toward rewards including profile boosts, Influencer badges, and Ambassador status.

• Referrals only count once the referred user fully completes their profile.
• Self-referrals, fake accounts, and referral spam are strictly prohibited.
• We actively monitor referral activity. Fraudulent referrals will result in reward revocation and may result in a permanent ban.
• Referral rewards have no cash value and are not redeemable for money.
• We reserve the right to modify or discontinue the referral programme at any time.

7. Privacy

Your use of MKUConnect is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data.

8. Warnings, Suspension & Termination

MKUConnect administrators may issue formal warnings for conduct that violates these Terms. Warnings are delivered as in-app notifications. Repeated violations following a warning may result in account suspension or permanent ban without further notice.

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently deactivate any account that violates these Terms, without prior notice, where we determine the violation is severe (e.g. harassment, fake profiles, abuse of the referral system, posting illegal content).

You may delete your account at any time from your profile settings. Upon deletion, your profile and messages will be removed from public view; some data may be retained for legal compliance and to prevent re-registration by banned users.

10. General Disclaimer of Warranties

MKUConnect is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the platform will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. Use the platform at your own risk.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MKUConnect and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising out of or related to your use of the platform, including damages arising from interactions with other users.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date above. Continued use of MKUConnect after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Kenya. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Kenya.
